Dhaka: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today stated that his party has consistently upheld the core principles of Islam and pledges to maintain this stance moving forward: Addressing the National Conference of Sammilito Imam-Khatib Parishad at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, Rahman emphasized BNP's unwavering commitment to Islamic values.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman highlighted his party's support for Islamic culture and its opposition to activities that threaten Islamic interests. He criticized past regimes for undermining Islam and noted the BNP's role in recognizing Qawmi Madrasa degrees under Begum Khaleda Zia's government in 2006. Rahman detailed the extensive network of over 5,000 madrasas and approximately 350,000 mosques across the country, employing millions in religious roles, emphasizing the importance of integrating these institutions into national development.
Rahman further criticized the post-independence constitution drafting process, alleging it did not reflect the majority's aspirations and praised BNP's founder, President Ziaur Rahman, for incorporating Islamic principles into the Constitution. He expressed support for Imam and Khatib demands, including service rules, and promised that a future BNP government would prioritize these initiatives and provide financial support to religious leaders.
BNP's future plans include offering monthly honorariums to financially struggling Imams and Muazzins, reinforcing their role as social reformers.
