Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has reiterated that the sole responsibility of the Election Commission is to ensure the conduct of free, fair, and acceptable elections. The CEC made these remarks at a workshop titled 'Building Bridges: Regional Electoral Governance and Citizen Observation Exchange' organized by the Asian Network for Free Elections at Hotel Lakeshore Heights in the capital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the CEC emphasized the necessity of upholding the rule of law as the foremost condition for conducting an impeccable election. He assured that, regardless of the challenges faced, the commission is committed to fulfilling its promise to the public by ensuring a transparent and acceptable electoral process. The CEC expressed confidence that they will be able to meet the commitments made to the nation and the world.
The government and political parties also support holding a fair election, which the CEC considers an added advantage. Observers and journalists, he noted, will play a crucial role in monitoring the election process, acting as the commission's "CC cameras." He underscored the importance of all stakeholders working together to achieve a free, fair, and participatory election, encouraging responsible, careful, and mature behavior from everyone involved.
On the topic of the referendum, the CEC mentioned that the public will be presented with four questions requiring 'Yes' or 'No' responses. He announced that the Referendum Law is set to be enacted next week, which will outline the procedures for conducting the referendum, presenting another challenge for the Election Commission.
Addressing IT-supported postal voting for expatriate Bangladeshi voters, the CEC highlighted efforts to simplify the voting process. He also pointed out the dual nature of technological advancements, stating that while they offer benefits, they also pose challenges. Miscreants have become more powerful with technology, including artificial intelligence, and their potential to disrupt the electoral process is a significant concern for the commission.
