Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today commemorated the late Barrister Maudud Ahmed as a genuine democratic leader, acknowledging his contributions to politics and his advocacy for the oppressed. Fakhrul shared these sentiments while speaking as the chief guest at a book launch ceremony for “Demise of Democracy: Bangladesh on the Way to a Failed State, 2009-2019,” authored by Maudud Ahmed, held at a hotel in Gulshan.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul emphasized Maudud Ahmed’s unwavering support for those who faced oppression and persecution. He pointed out that after Bangladesh’s independence, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman instituted a system of misrule, subjecting common citizens to suffering through the formation of the Rakkhi Bahini, a paramilitary force. Maudud Ahmed, he stated, stood by those persecuted individuals, showcasing his dedication to democratic principles.
Highlighting Maudud Ahmed’s commitment to historical practice, Fakhrul remarked on the sincerity and dedication with which Ahmed approached his work. Although Ahmed may have faced criticism or controversy in his political career, Fakhrul asserted that his historical writings remain beyond reproach.
Fakhrul also stressed the importance of Maudud Ahmed’s writings for the youth, expressing his belief that such books are essential for young people. He credited the youth for their role in achieving significant success and liberating the nation from oppressive forces, suggesting that Ahmed’s work could inspire further progress.
