Dhaka: A court here today ordered the detention of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Associate Professor Dr Ariful Islam Joarder Titu, who is also the member secretary of Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad (SWACHIP), in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the July Uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Miah issued the order after police presented Dr Titu in court, requesting his detention for the duration of the investigation. Dr Titu was apprehended at BMU earlier this morning.
Case documents reveal that on August 4, 2024, SWACHIP leaders and activists, affiliated with the Awami League, chanted slogans and launched attacks on protesting students and the public in front of the hospital. The attackers reportedly threw bricks and other heavy items, resulting in multiple injuries, as confirmed by the police.
The case was officially filed on January 14, 2025, in response to these violent events.
