Dhaka: Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed today announced that the government is on the verge of finalizing a decision regarding the procurement of body cameras for law enforcement agencies. The decision is expected to be made within the next few days.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Salehuddin addressed the media after leading two separate meetings at the Bangladesh Secretariat. These meetings were part of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase and the Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs. He explained that certain preparatory tasks related to the procurement process are still pending but are nearing completion.
In response to questions about potential delays in the procurement process, Dr Salehuddin emphasized the government's commitment to expedite the process by streamlining procedural timelines under the Public Procurement Rules (PPR). He stated, "Normally, tender procedures take some time, but we are trying to fast-track the process under the provisions of the PPR. Once the proposal is ready, we'll move forward quickly."
Dr Salehuddin did not provide specific details regarding the number of body cameras to be purchased or the specific agencies that would receive them. However, he indicated that the procurement would be prioritized based on operational needs and accountability requirements. The body cameras are intended for use by police personnel during the upcoming national election.
To ensure quality, transparency, and neutrality, the procurement process will be conducted through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
