Riyadh: Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo announced that the 2026 World Cup will mark the conclusion of his international career, signaling the end of an illustrious era in the sport. Ronaldo, who is 40 years old, shared his plans during a video link session at a Saudi forum, stating that he would retire from professional football in "one or two years."
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ronaldo, who has scored over 950 goals in club and international matches, confirmed his intention to make the 2026 World Cup his swan song. "Definitely, yes," he said when asked if the tournament would be his last. He added, "I'm gonna be 41 years old and I think it will be the moment."
Ronaldo's current engagement with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr began in 2023, a period during which he has often mentioned his impending retirement. "Let's be honest, when I mean soon, it's probably one or two years I'll still be at the game," he clarified, indicating that his time on the field is drawing to a close.
The five-time Ballon d'Or recipient aims to participate in his sixth World Cup next year. His closest attempt to claim the trophy was in 2006, when Portugal was defeated by France in the semi-finals. As of now, Portugal has not secured a spot in the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. However, they have the opportunity to qualify with a win against Ireland on Thursday.
Ronaldo's move to Al Nassr followed his departure from Manchester United for the second time in late 2022. This transition coincided with an influx of veteran football stars to Saudi Arabia, a nation investing heavily in sports and entertainment as part of an economic diversification initiative. Notably, Saudi Arabia was announced as the host for the 2034 World Cup in December of last year.
