Dhaka: Police have submitted a charge-sheet against seven individuals accused in the murder case of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a final-year student at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at the University of Dhaka. Shammo was stabbed to death at Suhrawardy Udyan while attempting to stop a group of drug peddlers from selling drugs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shammo, who also served as the literature and publication secretary for the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), was attacked on May 13, 2025. After the incident, his friends transported him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where he was declared dead upon arrival. The following day, his elder brother, Shariful Islam, filed a case with the Shahbagh Police Station.
Inspector Akhter Morshed, the Investigation Officer from the Detective Branch (DB) of Police, submitted the charge-sheet on November 6. The accused individuals include Mehedi Hasan, Md Rabbi alias Kobutor Rabbi, Md Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Md Hridoy Islam, Md Harunur Rashid Sohagh, and Md Robin. The police have recommended dropping charges against Sujon Sarkar, Tamim Hawlader, Samrat Mollik, and Palash Sardar, as evidence against them was lacking.
The charge-sheet identifies Mehedi Hasan as the ringleader who orchestrated drug sales in the park. When Shammo and his friends confronted the group about their activities, tensions escalated, culminating in a plot to kill him.
The document reveals that Mehedi supplied ganja to his associates, who then sold it around Suhrawardy Udyan's Temple Gate area. He also armed them with knives and tasers. On the day of the murder, Shammo confronted Kobutor Rabbi, who was carrying a taser. Rabbi fled, leading Shammo to pursue him on his motorbike.
Shammo caught up with Rabbi near the Gol Pukur area, where he slapped him. Rabbi then summoned his accomplices, sparking a fight between the two groups. During the altercation, Mehedi first stabbed a bystander who attempted to intervene, then attacked Shammo, stabbing him in the thigh and causing critical injuries.
As locals approached the scene, Mehedi and his associates fled, according to police.
