According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the potential deal with Sky, which is owned by US media conglomerate Comcast, would significantly bolster Sky’s presence in the UK television and streaming sectors. ITV, known for its free-to-air and paid services, anticipates a roughly nine percent drop in advertising revenue in the last quarter of the year. This decline is attributed to businesses holding back on spending in anticipation of the UK government’s forthcoming annual budget announcement in late November.
The announcement of the talks led to a 15 percent surge in ITV’s share price on Friday, although ITV cautioned that there is no guarantee that any transaction will occur or what the terms might be. Notably, the potential sale would not include ITV Studios, the company’s production division.
Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell, expressed surprise at the interest in ITV’s media and entertainment segment, rather than its production arm, ITV Studios. He remarked, “There was a lot of uncertainty over whether anyone would want to relieve ITV of this ball and chain, so to see interest from Sky is Christmas come early for management and shareholders.”
