Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has urged the interim government to conduct a referendum on the July Charter within November and to ensure that parliamentary elections are held in February of the following year. This demand was articulated during a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council, led by Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting, attended by members of the Central Executive Council, saw Dr. Shafiqur Rahman discussing the outcomes of his recent international visits, emphasizing their impact on the nation. The Council expressed concern over the government’s delay in legally implementing the July Charter. They cautioned against proposals to conduct the referendum and national election simultaneously, as this could affect both processes and diminish the significance of the referendum.
The Council highlighted the potential issue that if voting is suspended at any polling station during the general election, it might lead to delays in the referendum, which they deemed unacceptable. Jamaat called on the interim government to immediately issue the implementation order for the July Charter and emphasized the necessity of holding parliamentary elections in February, contingent on the referendum’s results.
Additionally, the Council advocated for the installation of CCTV cameras at all polling stations to ensure elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
