Narail: A court here today sentenced two individuals to life imprisonment in connection with a 2016 murder case in Sadar upazila of the district. District and Sessions Judge Sharmin Nigar announced the verdict at around 12:30 pm on Monday, as reported by Advocate SM Abdul Haque, the Public Prosecutor of the court. In addition to the life sentences, the court imposed a fine of Taka 20,000 on each convict.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the individuals convicted are Asha Begum, aged 30, from Baroipara village under Lohagara Police Station, and Arafat Sheikh, aged 32, from Kholishakhali-Nakshi village in Sadar upazila. The court also sentenced Roman Bhuiyan, aged 33, to seven years in prison with an additional six months of non-commissioned service in default.
The prosecution revealed that the victim, Masum Fakir, aged 35, went missing on the night of December 8, 2016. After his family conducted an unsuccessful search, police discovered Masum's body five days later, on December 13, on a char along the north bank of the Nabaganga River at Jalalshi village in Lohagara upazila. The body was then sent to the Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Following the incident, Shahidul Fakir, the victim's younger brother, filed a case with the Narail Sadar Police Station on December 15, accusing Asha Begum, the lover of the deceased, Masum Fakir. The police filed a charge sheet before the court, accusing four individuals, including two women, in the case.
The verdict was delivered after the court examined testimonies from a total of 22 witnesses.
