Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced that the number of mobile SIM cards that can be registered under a single subscriber's National Identity Card (NID) will be decreased prior to the upcoming national elections.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the current limit of 15 SIMs per NID will be reduced to 10 by the end of this month, with further reductions anticipated before the elections. The announcement was made during a press briefing following the 15th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on the Law and Order at the Home Ministry.
The Home Adviser explained that the decision to limit the number of SIM cards per NID is driven by the need to prevent crimes committed using SIMs registered under other individuals' names, which complicates the identification of actual offenders. By reducing the number of SIM cards that can be registered to a single person, the government aims to prevent misuse and bolster security.
Regarding concerns about a level playing field before the elections, the Adviser mentioned that no political parties have raised objections in this regard. He emphasized that recruitment and postings within law enforcement agencies have been conducted transparently, and the government is dedicated to ensuring that the elections are free, fair, and credible.
The press briefing was attended by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Nasimul Ghani, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General (DG) Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and Bangladesh Ansar and VDP DG Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud.
