Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized the importance of unobstructed elections for establishing democracy. He stated that elections serve as a correction and filtration process, and any obstruction would hinder the establishment of democracy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Khasru delivered these remarks during a discussion marking the fourth founding anniversary of the Gano Odhikar Parishad at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Kakrail. He stressed the need for restoring democratic order in the country through united participation in upcoming elections.
Khasru reflected on the struggles over the past 15-16 years, noting that despite victories, democratic order has not been fully restored. He highlighted the importance of unified participation, referencing the July National Charter, and expressed the need to resolve disagreements through public mandate.
He acknowledged that change is a gradual process, emphasizing that unresolved issues should remain in public discourse. Khasru urged continued discussions, explaining that democracy evolves over time, as seen in Western countries.
Calling for tolerance, Khasru urged respect for differing opinions to build a future Bangladesh. He warned that without reviving a culture of respect and tolerance, democracy cannot be institutionalized, even with reforms.
The event was presided over by Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, with participation from General Secretary Md Rashed Khan and party members. Vice-President Faruk Hasan moderated the discussion, which included speeches from various political party leaders.
