Agargaon: Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud has emphasized that the Election Commission (EC) has no alternative but to conduct a credible election to restore public confidence in the electoral process.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Masud stated in an interview at his office in Election Bhaban that a good election is essential for the nation and its people to regain confidence in the electoral system. He stressed the urgency, noting that there is no room for retreat as the commission is under pressure to deliver. He confirmed that the next parliamentary polls are scheduled before Eid-ul-Fitr in February.
Masud outlined that the EC is making every effort to ensure a free, fair, and neutral election, acknowledging the current lack of public confidence as a national crisis that needs to be addressed for the welfare of Bangladesh. He urged all involved parties to adhere to legal guidelines to guarantee an impartial and festive election, suggesting that adherence to the law will negate the need for enforcement if people behave accordingly.
He addressed the perception that the EC is influenced by external forces, asserting that a successful election could change this mindset. Masud expressed readiness to tackle challenges and affirmed that preparations are underway, with law and order being a significant focus. The commissioner noted that improvements in law and order have been reported, and law enforcement agencies are expected to support the EC in conducting a credible election.
Masud called for unbiased decision-making by all stakeholders, emphasizing the independence of election officials in performing their duties according to the law.
