Mabia Akhter Simanta Aims for Third Consecutive SA Games Gold

Dhaka: Mabia Akhter Simanta, the renowned female weightlifter from Bangladesh, is setting her sights on achieving a third consecutive gold medal at the upcoming South Asian (SA) Games. Having already secured gold medals in the 2016 and 2019 SA Games held in India and Nepal, respectively, Mabia is determined to continue her winning streak.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mabia’s career is marked by numerous achievements on both national and international stages. Her impressive track record includes breaking her own records in national competitions. From 2015 to 2024, she clinched gold medals in all national competitions she participated in. Furthermore, she has represented the country in the Youth Asian Games, where she won a bronze medal, and in the Youth Commonwealth Championship, securing one gold and two silver medals.



Mabia hails from a family originally based in the Madaripur district. Born in 1999, she was raised in Khilgaon, Dhaka, in a lower-middle-class family. Her journey into weightlifting began in 2010 when her maternal uncle, a boxing coach, introduced her to the sport. Despite having no prior knowledge of weightlifting or sports as a profession, Mabia quickly adapted and excelled in the field.



In an interview with BSS, Mabia highlighted the potential of weightlifting in Bangladesh. She emphasized the need for proper support and training to nurture and develop the sport in the country. Mabia expressed her gratitude towards her uncle and mentors who have supported her throughout her career. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, she remains focused on her goals and continues to inspire young athletes in Bangladesh.



Mabia also shared her thoughts on the importance of perseverance and self-belief for aspiring athletes. She encouraged beginners to embrace challenges and fight through difficulties to achieve success. Reflecting on her own journey, Mabia acknowledged the hardships she faced, including the decision to drop out of her studies due to financial constraints.



As she prepares for the upcoming SA Games, Mabia remains dedicated to her training and is hopeful of securing her third gold medal. Her story serves as a testament to the power of determination and resilience in the face of adversity.
