Chattogram: Weight and measurement issues are not just a concern for Bangladesh but represent a global challenge impacting business, health, and the environment, according to Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin. He made these remarks as the chief guest during a discussion meeting organized by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) at its Chattogram Divisional Office, in observance of World Standards Day.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Ziauddin emphasized the significance of maintaining consistency in the use of the metric system nationwide to avoid confusion and prevent fraudulent activities in trade. "Honest businesses face difficulties when others resort to non-standard practices for unfair gain," he stated during his address. He praised BSTI for its crucial role in fostering fair trade practices and resolving numerous issues related to weights and measurements.
Despite the efforts of BSTI, Dr. Ziauddin acknowledged that the institution cannot tackle all challenges alone and urged for a collective awareness and responsibility from the public. He stressed that every individual should ensure they neither shortchange others nor accept incorrect quantities of goods. The discussion was presided over by Engineer Md. Golam Rabbani, Head and Deputy Director of BSTI Chattogram Office.
The event also featured a keynote paper presentation by Dr. Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET). Additional contributions came from Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Sharif Uddin and Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) General Secretary Kazi Iqbal Bahar Chhaberi, who spoke as special guests.
