Rangpur: Renowned economist and BRAC Chairperson Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman emphasized the need for Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) to undergo restructuring in order to transform into a quality institution, both domestically and internationally. While addressing a discussion at BRUR's 17th founding anniversary, Dr Rahman highlighted the importance of strengthening efforts to achieve excellence in education and research by utilizing locally available innovative materials, especially in light of climate change.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Rahman, who also serves as the Executive Chairman of the Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC), noted the university's lack of progress in its first 15 years due to misguided leadership. However, he expressed optimism about the institution's current trajectory towards revival, emphasizing the need for joint initiatives involving the administration, alumni, and social support platforms to establish BRUR as a center of advanced knowledge.
The event, presided over by BRUR Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali, featured founding Vice-chancellor Professor Dr M Lutfar Rahman as the keynote discussant. Other notable attendees included Rangpur University Implementation Coordination Council convener Professor Dr Rezaul Haq, Vice-chancellor of Kurigram Agriculture University Professor Dr Md Rashedul Islam, and Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam.
Dr Rahman stressed the importance of fostering an education-friendly mindset among teachers and students, alongside addressing infrastructural deficits and ensuring a nature-friendly environment. He expressed confidence that, with proper direction, BRUR could establish itself as an advanced knowledge institution in the future.
Professor Dr Rezaul Haq reminisced about the nine-month movement he led for the implementation of Rangpur University, highlighting the university's role in driving socio-economic development in North Bengal through the knowledge and innovation of its students.
BRUR's founding Vice-chancellor Professor Dr M Lutfar Rahman emphasized the necessity of a knowledge-based economy and technology-driven education to tackle 21st-century challenges. He proposed the creation of a 'Universal Human Values Department' to sustain development by restoring human values at various societal levels.
Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shawkat Ali expressed confidence that BRUR could soon become a leading international standard higher education institution if students and teachers fulfill their roles with honesty and dedication.
The anniversary celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the national and university flags, followed by the release of balloons and pigeons, a procession, and cake cutting. The day concluded with sports competitions, a prayer session, and a cultural program.
