Dhaka: Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain today departed from Dhaka to participate in the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Midterm Ministerial Review Meeting in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The meeting is set to take place from October 14 to 16.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, an official spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Touhid left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Uganda this afternoon via an Ethiopian Airlines flight. On his way to Kampala, Touhid will stop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he is expected to attend an event at the Bangladesh Embassy on Monday.
Following his stopover, Touhid will continue to Kampala to join the NAM ministerial meeting, where foreign ministers and senior representatives from other NAM member states will also be present. The meeting's theme, 'Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,' aims to evaluate the progress on action points that were adopted by heads of state during the NAM Summit held earlier in 2024.
The discussions at the meeting are set to focus on the relevance of NAM amidst changing global power dynamics, emphasizing peace, security, human rights, and the rule of law. The issue of Palestine is anticipated to be a significant topic, highlighting the Movement's ongoing commitment to international humanitarian law and pertinent UN resolutions.
The Non-Aligned Movement, established in 1961, is the largest coalition of nations outside formal military or political blocs, comprising 120 member states. With Uganda assuming the NAM chairmanship in 2024 under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the meeting marks a renewed phase of South-South cooperation.
The midterm ministerial meeting is anticipated to produce key outcome documents that will guide NAM's collective agenda leading up to the next summit in Uzbekistan.
