Panchagarh: National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser for the Northern Region, Sarjis Alam, announced today that the NCP has no involvement in any scheme to postpone the forthcoming elections. Instead, the party advocates for free, fair, and participatory elections to be conducted as soon as possible.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam emphasized that the NCP would not object if the interim government scheduled the elections for early February. However, he stressed the necessity for visible justice and the implementation of essential reforms outlined in the July Charter, which he considers critical for the democratic process in Bangladesh.
Alam made these remarks while speaking to reporters at Hudupara Durga Mandir in Hafizabad union, following visits to several temples in Panchagarh Sadar upazila, where he also extended financial assistance. Addressing the issue of the NCP's electoral symbol, he clarified that the allocation of the symbol and election delays are separate issues. Alam insisted that the NCP is legally entitled to the Shapla (Water Lily) symbol and urged the Election Commission to allocate it according to the law, without yielding to external pressures.
During his temple visits during the Puja celebrations, Alam and his team distributed gifts and assessed the conditions of the temples and the locations for idol immersion. He underscored the need for government intervention to resolve disputes over khas land and religious properties, which in the past have been illegally occupied using counterfeit documents. Alam called for a commission to address these issues.
He also highlighted past incidents where conspirators involved in idol vandalism escaped without punishment. Alam urged authorities to ensure maximum penalties for such acts in the future. He further accused certain media outlets in a neighboring country of using AI-generated images to spread misinformation aimed at disrupting communal harmony in Bangladesh. He reassured that the law enforcement presence at the puja mandaps was adequate and maintained a peaceful environment.
Sadar upazila NCP Chief Coordinator Tanbirul Bari Nayon, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Coordinator Fazle Rabbi, and District Jubo Shokti Convener Engineer Abu Kayes Babu were also in attendance.
