Dhaka: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today emphasized the importance of partnering with China for economic transformation. ‘Social and economic development will be possible by increasing the competitiveness of Bangladesh and China,’ she said while addressing Dhaka-China Day 2025 at North South University here.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Farida highlighted that the Chief Adviser had visited China on March 26, 2025, where agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on economic and technical cooperation were signed. These agreements and MoUs aim to strengthen cooperation across various areas including culture, media, sports, and health.

She pointed out the significance of this cooperation for the younger generation, who make up more than half of the nation’s population and are pivotal to driving change.

Focusing on the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the adviser mentioned that through the collaborative efforts of Bangladeshi fishermen, workers, traders, importers, exporters, researchers, and scientists, the nation has nearly achieved self-sufficiency in fish, meat, and egg production. The domestic demand for fish and fish products is being met while exports continue to different countries globally.

Farida noted that China has been a steadfast trading partner for Bangladesh, with the relationship strengthening continually. She expressed optimism that future Bangladesh-China cooperation would unlock new opportunities in the fisheries and livestock sector, fostering investment in aquaculture technology, production-enhancing methods, climate-tolerant animal housing, disease control, antimicrobial resistance systems, modernization of fish landing and processing centers, and value-added industries.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen remarked that the Dhaka-China Day event showcases the close ties between the two nations. He noted that the activities highlight Chinese culture among the general public and students, fostering understanding and bonds between the people of China and Bangladesh.

Yao Wen also mentioned that the relationship between Bangladesh and China is at a historic juncture, with both countries progressing together in development cooperation and other areas.

The event featured speeches from Benazir Ahmed, founding life member and board of trustees member of NSU Trust, along with NSU Vice Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury. Diplomats, academicians, researchers, businessmen, and students from Bangladesh and China attended the event.
