Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) today launched a plantation campaign to plant trees and grasses on road medians stretching 31 kilometers of streets within its purview. DSCC administrator Md. Shahjahan Mia inaugurated the campaign to expand green patches in the southern part of the city under a plan called the “Zero Soil” programme, which will be carried out in two phases with an aim of planting ornamental flowering trees and grasses. ‘Covering the medians with green patches is part of our efforts to enhance the city’s beauty and curb environmental pollution,’ he said.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, officials familiar with the campaign said that under the first phase, the DSCC administrator planted or witnessed the planting of saplings on Mirpur Road, Abdul Gani Road, Shaheed Captain Mansur Ali Sarani, and the section from City College to Shimanto Square and Shaheed Farhan Faiyaz Road. They mentioned that the DSCC was carrying out the campaign jointly with the forest department, with several of the medians currently managed by forest officials.

Mia stated that the initiative was taken in line with the guidance of advisers from the local government and forest and environment ministries. DSCC’s chief executive officer, Md Zahirul Islam, secretary Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, chief waste management officer Air Commodore Md Mahbubur Rahman Talukder, and other officials were present at the event.
