Khulna: Agriculture Secretary Dr Mohammad Emdadullah Mian emphasized the importance of the agriculture sector as the “runway of development” for the country’s progress. “We have to go forward with the agriculture sector by giving the highest priority to it,” he stated at a regional workshop titled ‘Transforming Bangladesh Agriculture-Outlook-2050’, where he served as the chief guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the seminar, organized by the Agriculture Ministry, was chaired by Additional Secretary Dr Md Mahmudur Rahman. Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Firoz Sarkar participated as a special guest, and Dr Susmita Banik, National Project Coordinator of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), also addressed the attendees. Joint Secretary Kamrul Hassan delivered the welcome address, while Dr Mahmudur Rahman presented the keynote speech.
Dr Mian urged the development of an agriculture-friendly economy, emphasizing that the country cannot achieve development without agriculture. He projected that by 2050, the country could ensure food security and become self-reliant in food production if collective efforts are made. He highlighted that the workshop aims to determine the future of the country’s agriculture and create a comprehensive work plan and guideline.
He announced the integration of all 17 departments of the ministry under one umbrella, assuring that there is currently no shortage of fertilizer in the country. Describing agriculture as the heart of the nation, Dr Emdad stressed that the sector must not be underestimated.
The workshop was attended by officials from various sectors, including the agriculture department, water development board, BADC, fertilizer dealers, seed dealers, agriculture instrument traders, journalists, teachers, and representatives from government and non-government offices across different districts and upazilas of the division.
