Dhaka: The capital city witnessed 34mm rain till this morning, leaving most of the city streets waterlogged and causing suffering to commuters. Heavy rain, accompanied by thunderbolt, occurred in the city between 5:45 am and 7:00 am today while waterlogging was observed in Shantinagar, Siddeshwari, Malibagh, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Kalabagan, Karwan Bazar, Green Road, Manipuri Para, New Market, Asad Gate, Jigatola, and other areas. In some places, the water reached knee level, while in others it was waist deep.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, 34 millimeters of rain fell in the city between midnight and 6:00 am today. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported that a low-pressure is expected to form over the North Bay of Bengal today, while another low-pressure is expected to form over the North Bay by the same time. However, another low-pressure is expected to form over the East Bay on Wednesday.
The BMD noted that the formation of two systems within three days is not unusual, and their effects may increase rainfall and bring strong winds, particularly in coastal regions. In recent days, the capital Dhaka and other parts of the country have been experiencing sweltering, humid heat. On Saturday and Sunday, the capital’s sky was hazy. The BMD had earlier forecast that rainfall would increase starting from today.
