Dhaka: Assistant teachers at government primary schools across the country will now be eligible for higher pay grades upon completion of 10 and 16 years in service. This directive came with a letter issued by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the letter, signed by Joint Secretary of the Ministry’s School Branch-2, Rebeka Sultana, instructed the Directorate of Primary and Mass Education to initiate the process of higher scale pay upgrades for the eligible assistant teachers. The letter mentioned that the opinion has been sent from the finance division regarding this matter.

In response, the Finance Division confirmed that under paragraph 7 of the National Pay Scale 2015, if the basic pay scale of a post is upgraded, then further advancement to a higher grade within the same position will be considered after 10 additional years of service, without the need for formal promotion.

This development follows a significant salary reform that took place in November last year, when the pay scales of more than 354,000 teachers in over 65,000 government primary schools were upgraded nationwide. As part of that reform, the salary grade for head teachers was set at Grade 11, while assistant teachers were placed at Grade 13.
