Dhaka: The number of vehicles in Dhaka city is increasing, but it still remains insufficient compared to the ever-growing population. Working women and school and college students suffer greatly due to the lack of adequate transport facilities, with office-going women being the worst affected. Amid the crisis, there is a ray of hope for commuters of the densely populated capital as various app-based transportation service providers have stepped in to address the public transport problem. Many women are now using these services to reach their destinations on time.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Diba Shabnam, who works at an NGO, is one of the women benefiting from these app-based services. She has to reach her office by 9 am every day but previously faced regular issues with public transport. Despite arriving at the bus stop by 7:30 am, she often couldn't board a bus, resulting in frequent tardiness at work. CNGs were also hard to find, and bargaining with drivers added to her delays. However, since using services like Pathao and Uber, Diba now enjoys a more reliable commute and leaves home after 8 am, reaching her office quickly thanks to lighter morning traffic.

Although her transportation costs have slightly increased, Diba appreciates the independence and efficiency these services offer. She also values the ability to know fares upfront and the security measures in place through constant monitoring and the ability to lodge complaints if necessary.

Nabila, another commuter, faced similar challenges before joining a private organization in Motijheel. Initially hesitant to use app-based services, she finally tried them on a colleague's recommendation and found the experience comfortable and cost-effective. Nabila now avoids crowded buses and uses app-based transportation daily. She highlights the convenience of finding rides quickly and the reasonable costs, often benefiting from discount offers.

Ibrahim, a Pathao motorcycle driver, explained that drivers undergo registration and training processes, including instructions on traffic rules and passenger interactions, with a focus on respecting female passengers. Complaints, especially from women, are taken seriously, ensuring swift action if necessary.

The popularity of app-based transportation services is rising among women in Dhaka as these services provide a safer, more efficient alternative to traditional public transport. Sources reveal that approximately 35 percent of women in the city are currently using these services.
