Father and Son Sentenced to Imprisonment for Dowry-Related Torture in Jamalpur

Jamalpur: A court here today convicted a man and his father, sentencing them to two years’ rigorous imprisonment each for torturing a housewife over dowry at Dewanganj upazila of the district in 2021. The convicts are Md Kamrul Islam, 29, and his father Md Abdur Razzak, 50, residents of Langkarchar village under Dewanganj upazila.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kamrul Islam married Jahanara Begum, daughter of Md Moynal Haque of Moulavir Char village in the same upazila, on January 11, 2016. During the marriage, Kamrul received Taka 2 lakh in cash and household items worth Taka 1 lakh as dowry. The couple later had a daughter. However, Kamrul demanded an additional Taka 2 lakh from Jahanara. Upon her refusal, she was subjected to torture on July 31, 2021.



Following the incident, a case was filed, and police submitted a charge sheet against Kamrul and Abdur Razzak on September 13, 2021. Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict today after examining five prosecution witnesses and reviewing the relevant documents. The court sentenced both accused to two years’ rigorous imprisonment and also fined them Taka 20,000 each. During the pronouncement of the verdict, Abdur Razzak was absconding.
