Dhaka: Former chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad and general secretary of the district Jubo League, Shahid Mahmud, was sent to jail this afternoon. On Sunday night, police arrested him from a rented house in the Dhap Lalkuthi area of Rangpur city.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Senior Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Md. Mosharraf Hossain issued the order as police presented Mahmud before the court. Following the events of August 5, 2024, five cases, including two murder cases, were filed against him, prompting his decision to go into hiding.

The police reported that the cases were related to charges of attack and vandalism, including two murders, involving students after August 5 last year. Nilphamari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge MR Sayeed confirmed the development, stating, "When he was produced before the court today, the judge rejected his bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail."
