Dhaka: New procurement and nationwide fresh supplies of medical products help community clinics recover from medicine shortage easing free medicare for patients.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Community Clinic Health Support Trust (CCHST) Managing Director Md. Akhtaruzzaman stated that medicines worth Tk 120 crore have already been procured from Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL) and distribution has begun. Officials reported that the country's 14,467 community clinics serve an average of 500,000 patients daily, aiming to provide free healthcare and essential medicines at the grassroots level.
Typically, each clinic receives medicine supplies every three months, with 22 types of medicines provided free of cost. However, recent months saw a shortage, impacting initial treatment visits. This shortage is expected to be resolved by next week as medicines have been dispatched to clinics across all districts, with several already receiving their consignments. Akhtaruzzaman noted that it typically takes one or two days for medicines to reach the upazila and union levels, expressing confidence that all community clinics will be stocked by next week.
Akhtaruzzaman also mentioned that an additional Taka 200 crore worth of medicines is being procured. Currently, 14,467 community clinics are operational nationwide, each staffed by a Community Healthcare Provider (CHCP), a Health Assistant, and a Family Planning Assistant, providing services twice a week. The clinics are overseen by a community group of 13 to 17 members, ensuring smooth operations.
In response to rising hypertension concerns, Amlodipine 5mg is now available at the clinics, along with Metformin 500mg for diabetes management. CCHST Director (Field Administration) Asif Mahmud highlighted that each clinic sees around 35 patients daily, collectively serving an average of 500,000 patients nationwide. Although 22 types of medicines are provided free, the list currently excludes antibiotics. Mahmud expressed optimism that medicines will reach all clinics within days.
CHCP of Gazipur Sadar Upazila Community Clinic, Parmul Akter, confirmed to BSS that she received medicines recently, with all community clinics in Gazipur district now supplied.
