Dhaka: A seminar titled 'Piloting Locally Developed AI in Radiology: A Collaborative Initiative between BMU and BUET' was hosted jointly by Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The event took place in the lecture hall of BMU Super Specialized Hospital, as stated in a press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the seminar was organized by the Department of Radiology and Imaging at BMU and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at BUET, as part of disseminating the research project 'An Artificial Intelligence (AI) Enabled Web-Application for Assistive Online Reporting of Radiological Images'. This project is supervised by BUET's Department of Biomedical Engineering and funded by the World Bank.
BUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman, serving as the chief guest, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in medical science, particularly in radiology. He highlighted the importance of developing AI solutions locally to cater to specific environmental and contextual needs. Dr. Badruzzaman noted the significant role AI could play not just in radiology but across various medical fields, including oncology and pathology.
BMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Shahinul Alam presided over the seminar, expressing optimism about the collaboration between BMU and BUET. He suggested that joint efforts would usher in a new era for Bangladesh's healthcare sector, improving patient outcomes through innovation and advanced medical solutions. Prof. Shahinul stressed the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between doctors and engineers in enhancing healthcare services.
Other notable speakers included BMU's Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, and Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar. Additionally, BUET teacher Professor Dr. M Tariq Arafat presented on biomedical engineering, while Professor Dr. Toufiq Hasan discussed AI's necessity and importance in radiology.
The seminar was attended by BMU's Faculty of Paediatrics Dean Professor Dr. Md. Atiar Rahman, Faculty of Medical Technology Dean Professor Dr. M. Abu Hena Chowdhury, Faculty of Dental Dean Associate Professor Dr. Sakhawat Hossain Sayanto, along with other esteemed faculty members, doctors, and officials from BMU. BUET's Pro Vice-Chancellor and project engineers were also present, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the event.
