Dhaka: Biman Bangladesh Airlines has initiated a series of immediate and long-term measures to enhance safety standards, accountability, and operational reliability. The national flag carrier emphasized that passenger safety and service quality are of “highest priority,” as stated in a recent announcement.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a four-member high-powered investigation committee has been established to thoroughly review technical issues that occurred between July 1 and August 13. The committee will scrutinize maintenance records and operational processes on a flight-by-flight basis, identify root causes, and determine responsibility in cases of negligence or lapses. The committee is expected to submit its findings within 10 working days, along with recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

As an immediate measure, an investigation into a malfunction of the toilet flush on the Dhaka-Abu Dhabi flight is underway. Personnel management changes have been implemented to ensure accountability, with two officials transferred and disciplinary action taken against one engineering officer, including a show-cause notice issued to another in Chattogram.

To enhance technical capacity, Biman has started stocking additional aircraft wheels at key outstations like Jeddah, Dubai, Madinah, Dammam, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah to facilitate swift replacements during emergencies. Procurement orders for more wheels have also been placed.

An inquiry into a tire burst incident in Jeddah is being conducted under the supervision of the Director of Flight Operations. Maintenance oversight has been reinforced by the Director of Engineering and Material Management and Chief Engineers, with a special night maintenance shift introduced from August 18 for continuous monitoring.

A comprehensive review of Biman’s inventory management system is in progress, including discussions with Boeing to revise the Component Services Program list and reassess the Recommended Spare Parts List. Tailored Part Packages are being evaluated to ensure procurement aligns with actual usage data.

Long-term capacity building measures include recurrent training for engineers and the recruitment of new apprentice mechanics to strengthen in-house expertise and technical manpower. Biman Bangladesh Airlines is committed to maintaining the highest safety standards and technical reliability, prioritizing passenger safety and trust.
