Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus announced that the “Joint Declaration” on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represents a significant milestone in health protection and will aid in achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Speaking at the signing ceremony, he emphasized the collective effort needed to make public health protection more dynamic in Bangladesh.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the chief adviser highlighted the growing prevalence of NCDs globally, with a particularly severe impact on Bangladesh due to its unique socioeconomic and geographical challenges. He cited a 2022 World Health Organization report, noting that 71 percent of deaths in Bangladesh are due to NCDs, with 51 percent classified as premature, occurring before age 70.

Prof Yunus pointed out the financial strain caused by medical expenses related to NCDs, which account for 69 percent of out-of-pocket healthcare costs. He called for increased public awareness and an integrated approach involving multiple ministries, including food, agriculture, education, sports, and local government, to tackle the NCD crisis.

He underscored the importance of formulating health-friendly policies and prioritizing the health of children, adolescents, and women. Prof Yunus advocated for establishing healthy lifestyles and making responsible civic behavior a social movement, with both government and private sector collaboration.

The chief adviser stressed the need for intensive monitoring, evaluation, and appropriate resource allocation for the declaration’s implementation. He expressed confidence that the Health Services Division, supported by public-private partnerships and international cooperation, particularly from the World Health Organization, will lead the effort successfully.

Senior secretaries from 35 ministries, as well as various government officials and development partners, participated in the event, underscoring the collaborative spirit needed to advance national health objectives.
