Pirojpur: A mobile court has seized three dredgers for illegal sand mining in the Kancha River of Indurkani Upazila of the district.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation was led by Executive Magistrate and Indurkani Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Hasan-bin-Muhammad Ali. The mobile court focused its activities over the Kancha and Baleshwar rivers, imposing a fine of Tk 3 lakh as a penalty for the illegal activities.

The illegal sand mining has been causing significant damage to the natural balance of the river, leading to severe erosion and posing a threat to public safety, stated Muhammad. “Our campaign to prevent this destructive activity at any cost will continue,” he emphasized.

Previously, on August 17, the district administration had canceled the lease of the sand quarry at the location and issued a new notification to halt the activities. Despite this order, an influential group continued illegal sand mining, prompting the upazila administration to conduct the mobile court operation.
