Kuala lumpur: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus proclaimed today that the honorary doctorate awarded to him by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is a powerful reminder of his ongoing commitment to advocate for the advancement of young individuals.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Yunus expressed his profound appreciation during his speech at a special convocation held at the UKM campus. He stated, “I stand before you today with deep humility and sincere gratitude. It is truly an honour to be here at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, an institution I am proud to be associated with for a long time.”
The event was organized to honor Prof Yunus with an honorary doctorate in recognition of his significant contributions to the promotion of social business. Prof Yunus emphasized that the accolade is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the spirit and resilience of the people of Bangladesh. “I accept it not for myself alone, but on behalf of the people of Bangladesh, whose courage, strength, and hope continue to guide my way forward,” he stated.
He further reflected on the importance of this recognition, as it reinforces his duty to work towards fulfilling the aspirations of young people. Prof Yunus highlighted the bravery of many young individuals who stood against oppressive regimes in Bangladesh last year, with some even sacrificing their lives in the quest for a just future.
Prof Yunus acknowledged the award as a symbol of the courage, strength, and determination of Bangladesh’s populace, particularly the women and young entrepreneurs. He articulated that these individuals continue to demonstrate that with the right support and opportunities, no challenge is insurmountable.
He concluded by emphasizing the transformative impact that small financial support and basic training can have on disadvantaged communities, particularly when directed towards women. “This is how real, sustainable development happens,” he remarked.
