Dhaka: Abahani Limited conceded a 2-0 defeat to FC Muras United of Kyrgyzstan in the preliminary round of the AFC Challenge League held at the National Stadium. This result marked an end to Abahani’s journey in the qualifying stage of the tournament.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the match remained goalless through the first half as both teams struggled to find their rhythm. Muras United, however, gained the upper hand in the second half with midfielder Atai Dzhumashev breaking the deadlock in the 48th minute. Dzhumashev capitalized on a precise pass from Andriy Batsula, heading the ball into the net and giving Muras United a crucial lead.
Despite early attempts from Muras United, Abahani’s goalkeeper Mitul Marma stood resolute, denying several shots, including an early effort from forward Yogulov in the 6th minute and another powerful attempt from forward Codjo Chabel three minutes later.
Abahani created their first significant opportunity in the 17th minute when Malian forward Soleymene Diabate launched a counter-attack. Although Diabate’s shot went over the crossbar, it signaled Abahani’s intent. However, Muras United continued to threaten, with Codjo Chabel nearly scoring in the next minute, only for Mitul Marma to save the attempt.
Abahani’s efforts to level the score continued, but they couldn’t break through Muras United’s defense. A promising move in the 31st minute saw forward Mohammad Ibrahim’s shot narrowly miss the target. Muras United, on the other hand, remained tactically astute, controlling the game and limiting Abahani’s opportunities.
Dzhumashev sealed the victory for Muras United with a second goal during injury time in the second half. His lofted shot from the right wing left Mitul Marma with no chance, ensuring a 2-0 win for the Kyrgyzstan side.
With this defeat, Abahani Limited was eliminated from the qualifying stage, while Muras United advanced to the final round, marking a successful debut in the tournament.
