Dhaka: Professor Dr. Harun Al Rashid and Assistant Professor Dr. Md. Zahirul Islam (Shakil) have been elected as the President and Secretary General, respectively, of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a pro-BNP professional organization for registered MBBS and BDS doctors in Bangladesh. The election results were announced following the completion of the voting process.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Harun-Shakil panel was successful in securing all the posts in the election. Dr. Harun received 1,369 votes, defeating his opponent Professor Dr. A.K.M. Azizul Haque, who garnered 1,202 votes, while Dr. Shakil won the Secretary General position with 1,458 votes against Dr. Abdus Shakur Khan, who received 1,079 votes.
The election was held at Will’s Little Flower School and College in the Kakrail area of the capital. Voting took place between 1 pm and 5 pm, and out of 3,117 registered voters, 2,600 participated in the election process. Bijon Kanti Sarkar, an adviser to the BNP chairperson, served as the Chief Election Commissioner and announced the results after midnight.
The DAB election included five key posts: President, Senior Vice President, Secretary General, Treasurer, and Senior Joint Secretary General. Two main panels, Harun-Shakil and Aziz-Shakur, contested the election. The Harun-Shakil panel secured victories in all positions, with candidates including Dr. Abul Kenan as Senior Vice President, Dr. Md. Mehedi Hasan as Treasurer, and Dr. AKM Khalequzzaman Dipu as Senior Joint Secretary General.
Professor Lutfar Rahman of the DAB Election Commission noted the competitive nature of the election and expressed satisfaction at the enthusiastic participation of voters. The election process was described as a positive demonstration of democratic politics within the organization.
Following their victory, Professor Dr. Harun Al Rashid expressed gratitude to the voters for their trust in the Harun-Shakil panel. He emphasized the importance of cooperation in the organization’s future endeavors. The election event also featured speeches from BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, joining virtually from London, and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
