Dhaka: Adviser to the Ministries of Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs, Sharmeen S Murshid, emphasized the necessity of prioritizing human research in coastal regions over plain lands, considering the geographical nature of Bangladesh. This focus is crucial due to the unique challenges faced in these areas.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser highlighted the importance of research in shedding light on the situation, causes, and necessary initiatives related to neurodevelopmental disabilities among children and adults in Bangladesh. She expressed these views while serving as the chief guest at the national research unveiling program on Bangladesh Neurodevelopmental Disabilities held at a city hotel.
Murshid noted a shortage of researchers dedicated to human research within the country. She pointed out that social barriers around disability persist in Bangladesh, but the research shows how technology, medical interventions, and social support can collectively help children unlock their potential.
She further mentioned that the Constitution, National Children Policy, and the Protection of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act ensure that every child, regardless of disability, is entitled to dignity and opportunity. Murshid expressed hope that the research findings would guide future policymaking, school systems, therapy services, and family-based support structures.
The adviser also expressed gratitude to all researchers, physicians, organizations, and ministries involved in the research initiative, expressing optimism that this effort would enhance awareness and compassionate actions concerning neurodevelopmental disabilities.
The event was chaired by Mahmud Hasan, Chief Executive of Afsan International, and featured speeches from notable figures, including educationist Rasheda K. Chowdhury, Professor of Family Health at Columbia University Tanvir Hasan, Professor at BRAC University Moloy Kanti Mridha, and Trustee of Afsan International Dr. Mosaddek Ahmed Chowdhury. The event was attended by researchers, physicians, development workers, journalists, and teachers from special needs schools.
