Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today expressed optimism that a free and fair election will be held on time as promised by interim government's Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. "We hope that the aspirations of the people will be realized through free and fair elections at the right time, as promised by the Chief Adviser," he stated at a programme titled Implementation of the Recommendations of the UN Fact-Finding Report this afternoon at a city hotel.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus also participated in the event and delivered a speech. Fakhrul mentioned that while disagreements are natural in a democracy, minor differences are being exaggerated, leading to a division among the nation.
Fakhrul emphasized the need for the expedited trial of the July mass killing and necessary reforms. He urged that these reforms must be thorough, warning that failure to do so could lead to a return of dictatorship. He underscored the significance of having a government that represents the people, stating, "We all need to remember one thing. A government that represents the people is very important."
Reflecting on the symbolic significance of July, Fakhrul remarked that it is not only the month of liberation from tyranny but also a time for the nation's rebirth. He expressed hope for the cooperation of the youth in building a future Bangladesh where human rights are upheld and a welfare state is established. He envisioned a future where children would no longer have to sacrifice their lives.
