Dhaka: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) today approved 12 projects with a total estimated cost of Taka 8,149.38 crore, including a significant project for the further development of the University of Dhaka at a cost of Taka 2,840.39 crore. The approvals were given during the 12th ECNEC meeting of the interim government and the first meeting of the current fiscal year (FY26), held at the NEC Conference Room in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the city.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, ECNEC Chairperson and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus presided over the meeting, while Planning Adviser Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud briefed reporters afterward. Of the total estimated cost, Taka 8,058.77 crore will come from the government of Bangladesh, Taka 143.33 crore will be provided as project assistance, and Taka 52.72 crore will be funded by the concerned organization’s own resources.
The 12 approved projects include six new initiatives, four revised projects, and two projects with extended timelines without additional costs. The University of Dhaka project aims to develop academic buildings, residential facilities, and other infrastructure to meet growing demands. The ECNEC meeting emphasized enhancing residential facilities for female students and preserving historical sites like SM Hall and Curzon Hall.
Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud expressed satisfaction with the approval of the Dhaka University development project and highlighted plans for multi-storey buildings to optimize land use. The project includes six academic buildings, nine residential halls, and seven other structures.
Furthermore, Dr. Mahmud referenced the IMED project inspection report, calling for a comprehensive review to address issues related to project management and contractor accountability. The Bus Rapid Transit project from Gazipur to Airport was criticized as unplanned, with suggestions for a feasibility review and potential toll implementation on BRT lanes.
A proposal for constructing flats for the families of the martyrs of the July uprising was withdrawn pending further evaluation. Other approved projects include the establishment of fire stations, Coast Guard development, rural sanitation, and railway maintenance, among others.
The meeting also reviewed 18 previously approved projects and adjusted project titles as necessary. Advisers, Planning Commission members, and secretaries were in attendance.
