Chattogram: Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3. All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been instructed to remain in shelter until further notice, according to a maritime warning bulletin issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, low-lying areas in Bangladesh's coastal districts are at risk of being inundated by tidal surges. The districts facing potential inundation include Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Barishal, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, and their offshore islands and chars. The Met Office has attributed this risk to the influence of the new moon phase and a depression, which could lead to wind-driven tidal surges of 1-3 feet above the normal astronomical tide in these areas.
The depression, which was located over Gangetic West Bengal and the adjoining northwest Bay and Bangladesh coast, has moved west-northwestwards and now lies over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand as a land depression. It is anticipated to continue its trajectory west-northwestwards.
The influence of this depression has resulted in a steep pressure gradient over the North Bay, leading to gusty or squally weather conditions that may impact the maritime ports, the North Bay, and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh.
