Chattogram: Shipping Advisor Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain today highlighted the importance of appointing a foreign company in Chattogram Port for operational activities. The engagement of a foreign company is crucial to pave the way for the induction of the latest technology to improve the port handling capacity, he said. The adviser made these remarks while inaugurating an international standard chemical shed at Chattogram port. Terming Chattogram Port as the lifeline of the country, he urged all to refrain from spreading propaganda on the issue in the country's interests.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sakhawat Hossain emphasized that Chattogram Port belongs to Bangladesh and will remain under national ownership. The aim is to elevate the port to an international level. The adviser mentioned that the present government wants to make the port activities more efficient than in the past. He acknowledged the efforts of those who operated the New Mooring Terminal (NCT) for 17-18 years, noting their good work but asserting that new initiatives are underway to enhance port efficiency.
Pointing out the efficiency of ports in Singapore, the adviser remarked that most are operated with advanced technologies by private companies. He stressed that to increase the efficiency of Bangladeshi ports, it is essential to adopt similar technologies. He noted that a port can only enter the international arena when an international operator is involved. The management of the port will remain under national control, with the foreign operator working under that management. The task of operating the terminal is merely being transferred from one company to another.
Sakhawat further stated that the performance of the NCT has increased by 30 percent after engaging the Navy for its operation, marking significant progress. In response to a query about port tariffs, the adviser explained that the tariff was raised after discussions with stakeholders and an inter-ministerial meeting decision. He highlighted that the port tariff at Chattogram is much lower than other ports globally, even when compared to Mongla port, and noted that the tariff had not been increased since 1986.
