Rangpur: As the anti-discrimination student movement gained momentum, the then fascist regime intensified mass arrests and adjusted the curfew in Rangpur division for 13 hours on July 26, 2024.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the unrest began after Abu Sayeed, a student from Begum Rokeya University, was fatally shot by police on July 16. This incident sparked a significant movement with thousands from various sectors participating in demonstrations across Rangpur city. In response, the Rangpur Divisional Commissioner, Md Zakir Hossain, announced on July 25 that the curfew would be relaxed in all eight districts of Rangpur from 6 am to 7 pm on July 26.
Zakir Hossain informed reporters that the curfew would be enforced until 6 am on July 25 and then reinstated from 7 pm until July 29 morning. The 13-hour relaxation on July 26 encompassed Panchagarh, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, and Rangpur. Security forces, including BGB, police, RAB, and Ansar, were deployed alongside the army to maintain order.
Efforts to suppress the movement intensified, with joint force patrols being strengthened to prevent any incidents. Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mobasswer Hasan reiterated that various security personnel were actively working to uphold law and order.
On the same day, the Begum Rokeya University administration provided financial aid to the family of Abu Sayeed, acknowledging his sacrifice. A university delegation visited his village and presented a check of Taka 7.50 lakh to his parents, as confirmed by former proctor Md Shariful Islam.
In a separate development, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Maruf Hossain reported the arrest of 20 BNP-Jamaat members, including a key coordinator, in connection with recent violence. The arrests occurred within a 24-hour timeframe starting from 8 am on July 25.
Speaking to BSS, Rahamat Ali, a student coordinator and associate of Abu Sayeed, highlighted the communication difficulties faced due to internet shutdowns. He accused the regime and its affiliates of creating an environment of fear through threats of mass arrests and disappearances, yet emphasized the determination of students to continue their fight against oppression.
