Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today expressed sincere thanks to the interim government for the arrest of former chief justice (CJ) ABM Khairul Haque. "I sincerely thank the government for taking action against him, even after such a long overdue," he told journalists at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office here.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul described Khairul Haque as a significant adversary to Bangladesh, citing the harm he caused while in a prominent role. Fakhrul emphasized that with the responsibility of shaping the nation's destiny, Khairul Haque betrayed the people and the state.
The BNP leader expressed hope for a thorough investigation into all allegations against Khairul Haque, advocating for a fair trial. He stated, "He should be exposed to exemplary punishment so that no one can dare to harm the country being in such a position in the future."
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Khairul Haque, who also served as the former Chairman of the Law Commission, this morning. He held the position of Chief Justice from October 1, 2010, to May 17, 2011. During his tenure, the Appellate Division bench he led delivered a verdict on May 10, 2011, nullifying the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution and rendering the caretaker government system illegal.
