Dhaka: A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in connection with the killing of Abdul Qaium Ahad amid the mass uprising in the Jatrabari area during July-August. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanaullah issued the order following Justice Khairul's presentation in court by the police, who requested his detention pending the ongoing investigation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Justice Khairul was apprehended by a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from the Dhanmondi area. DMP Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrest. The case documents detail that Abdul Qaium Ahad was shot near the Kajla Police Box in Jatrabari on July 18, 2025. After the initial shot, then officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station Abul Hasan allegedly fired additional rounds, resulting in Ahad's death on the scene.
The case was initiated by Ahad's father, Alauddin, at Jatrabari Police Station on July 6, 2025. It lists 467 accused individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with Justice Khairul being the 44th accused. Justice Khairul served as Bangladesh's 19th Chief Justice from October 1, 2010, to May 17, 2011, and was appointed as the chairman of the Law Commission on July 23, 2013, a role he maintained through several reappointments.
