Dhaka: The European Union (EU) has allocated EUR 26 million to Bangladesh to bolster ongoing reforms in the primary education and Technical and Vocation Education and Training (TVET) sectors. This financial injection acknowledges the significant advancements achieved by the Bangladeshi Government in implementing reforms aligned with the National Education Policy, the National Skills Development Policy, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this substantial payment forms part of the EU's wider commitment to support Bangladesh's education system, encompassing a budget support operation of EUR 245 million dedicated to primary education and TVET. EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller emphasized the importance of this disbursement, stating it acknowledges real progress and reaffirms the partnership aimed at empowering diverse communities through quality education and vocational skills.
The EU is deeply invested in Bangladesh's education reform agenda, aiming to cultivate a skilled generation prepared for future challenges. Ambassador Miller highlighted education as a pivotal investment for fostering a more equitable and prosperous society. The EU has consistently supported Bangladesh's education sector, a critical area for the country's inclusive economic growth.
Since 2018, the EU has contributed EUR 219.125 million in grants to these two education sub-sectors. An additional EUR 6 million is allocated for implementing reforms and building institutional capacity through technical assistance. This funding has enabled Bangladesh to achieve tangible progress in primary education, including piloting a remedial education program to address foundational literacy and numeracy gaps and prioritizing inclusive infrastructure with the construction of over 35,000 gender-segregated WASH blocks.
In the TVET sector, the EU has aided Bangladesh in advancing key structural reforms, including developing a Bangladesh National Qualifications Framework (BNQF) policy and adopting a Quality Assurance Manual to standardize practices. Looking forward, the EU encourages Bangladesh to align its education and skills development reforms with the EU's Global Gateway strategy. Such alignment could enhance Bangladesh's role in future talent partnerships and global value chains, creating stronger connectivity with the EU and increasing employment opportunities.
