Dhaka: The High Court (HC) today issued a rule, directing the relevant authorities to explain why an order should not be passed to declare the July-August Mass Uprising martyrs, such as Abu Sayeed and Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, as national heroes.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a High Court division bench consisting of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Sayed Jahed Mansur issued the rule following a hearing on a writ petition related to the matter. Advocate Mohammad Ali Jinnah presented the plea before the court, while Assistant Attorney General Ekramul Kabir represented the state.

The court also questioned why a comprehensive list of the martyrs from the Mass Uprising should not be compiled and published through an official gazette. Furthermore, the rule inquired why Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus should not be declared as the ‘National Reformer of New Bangladesh.’ The officials concerned, including the cabinet secretary and law secretary, have been asked to respond to the rule.
