Dinajpur: National Consensus Commission (NCC) member Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar today announced that the commission is actively working to ensure that an autocratic regime does not resurface in the country.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Majumdar revealed that the commission has introduced a series of proposals known as The Draft National Consensus Charter. These proposals are specifically designed to prevent the return of autocracy. He emphasized the urgent need for reforms in the electoral system, constitution, local government, and governance structures, all of which are detailed in the charter. The intention is to convey to the government that the people's opinions and recommendations are crucial for permanently ending any resurgence of authoritarianism.
Dr. Majumdar made these statements as the chief guest during a citizen dialogue at the BRAC Learning Centre in Bashar Hat, an event organized by Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN). In a media interaction following the dialogue, he mentioned that the government has established 11 reform committees to combat authoritarianism. Six of these committees have been unified under the National Consensus Commission, with Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus leading them. Dr. Majumdar noted that the commission is currently focused on building consensus and has already agreed on several key reforms to prevent the reestablishment of authoritarian rule. Engaging in dialogue with political parties is a part of this ongoing effort.
The citizen dialogue was chaired by Md. Belal Uddin Shikder Rubel, President of SHUJAN's Dinajpur District Chapter. The event saw participation from leaders and activists from the central body, Rangpur Division, and various districts including Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, and Panchagarh. More than a hundred attendees, comprising journalists, social workers, and professionals from these regions, took part in the discussions.
