Cumilla: The water level in the Gomti River in Cumilla has started receding as rainfall began easing today. The water level, which had increased for a few days due to continuous rains and inundation from upstream, is now decreasing, bringing relief to the people of the low-lying areas and char.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Water Development Board (WDB) reported that the water level of the Gomti River was 8.94 meters at 9:09 am today, flowing 2.36 meters below the danger level. The water level was recorded at 9.33 meters at 12:00 midnight tonight. Earlier on Thursday, the river's water level was almost touching the danger level. Due to reduced rainfall in the Indian state of Tripura, the flow of inundation from upstream has also decreased.
Executive Engineer of the WDB, Khan Md Waliuzzaman, confirmed that the water level is gradually falling with the reduction in rainfall. He stated, "If there is no heavy rain at the river's source in Tripura, India, the water level is expected to decrease further."
Deputy Commissioner Md. Amirul Kaysar informed that 583 shelters have been prepared, and sufficient dry food, GR rice, and cash are in stock. He added that the water level of the Gomti River has started receding, offering much-needed relief to the affected areas.
