Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has announced its intention to restore its power to nullify or halt the election results of an entire parliamentary constituency in the event of voting irregularities. This proposal was revealed by Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah following the commission’s eighth meeting at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Commissioner Sanaullah addressed reporters, explaining that while the EC currently holds the authority to cancel results from individual polling centers due to irregularities, it lacks the power to annul the entire constituency’s election results-an authority that was previously revoked. “We’ve now proposed to get it back,” Sanaullah stated, expressing optimism about regaining this power.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, included four election commissioners, the EC secretary, and other relevant officials. Although the agenda included a proposal to amend the Representation of the People Order (RPO), detailed discussions were deferred to a subsequent meeting, as confirmed by Sanaullah.

He further mentioned that the draft of the supplementary voter list, in preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections, is ready and expected to be published next week. In addition, a draft demarcation of constituencies will also be released next week.
