Mahfuj Calls for Embracing Spirit of July Uprising to Foster Democratic Bangladesh

Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Mahfuj Alam today emphasized the importance of embracing the spirit of the July mass uprising as a foundation for building a democratic state in Bangladesh, ensuring the protection of civil rights for all citizens. He made this statement during the premiere of the documentary ‘Shraban Bidroho,’ which chronicles the July Uprising, at the Bangladesh National Museum’s main auditorium in Shahbagh.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahfuj Alam highlighted that the documentary’s exhibition aims to preserve the memory of the July Uprising martyrs and remind the current generation of their civic responsibilities. He urged everyone to honor the sacrifices made by the martyrs and to work towards the nation’s welfare.



At the event, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki also addressed the audience. Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farzana chaired the session.



Professor Asif Nazrul asserted that the events of July would remain unforgettable and assured that the perpetrators of the massacre would face trial before the upcoming national elections. Adilur Rahman Khan warned against the resurgence of fascist forces and encouraged collective resistance against any such attempts. Mostofa Sarwar Farooki stressed the importance of political consensus to prevent the return of fascism and urged unity in honoring the martyrs’ sacrifices.



Family members of the martyrs, including Shaheed Abu Sayeed’s father Maqbul Hossain and martyred journalist Tahir Zaman Priyo’s mother Shamsi Ara Zaman, voiced their demand for a swift trial of those responsible for the killings during the uprising. The event was attended by relatives of the martyrs, injured individuals from the uprising, students, university teachers, government officials, and people from various walks of life.



The documentary ‘Shraban Bidroho,’ produced by the Directorate of Film and Publications under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, explores the movement’s background, the sequence of events during the July Uprising, and the shift in consciousness among students and the general populace against the fascist regime. It features accounts from relatives of martyrs, student leaders, and societal figures, alongside rare videos, photographs, and graffiti from the era. The documentary vividly depicts the brutality of law enforcement and the dictator’s repression, serving as a poignant historical document for future generations.
