Jamalpur: A human chain was formed in Islampur upazila of the district on Sunday afternoon demanding effective protection from river erosion. People from all walks of life, including leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its front organizations, joined the human chain held on the west bank of the Brahmaputra River at East Bahadurpur village under Palbandha union.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event saw participation from various community members who voiced their concerns over the ongoing threat posed by river erosion. Adviser to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and former Cabinet Secretary ASM Abdul Halim addressed the gathering, highlighting the risks that erosion by the Jamuna and Brahmaputra rivers has posed to lives and livelihoods in Islampur upazila.
He emphasized that numerous families have been left homeless, struggling to survive after losing their houses and properties to the relentless erosion. Abdul Halim called on the government to implement long-term and sustainable measures to prevent further erosion, urging for immediate action to safeguard the affected communities.
