Dhaka: The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has apprehended a bus driver who had been evading capture following a devastating crash that led to the deaths of 11 passengers, including children.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the incident occurred on April 2 when a microbus traveling to Cox's Bazar collided with an oncoming bus on the highway in Lohagara. The crash resulted in ten passengers dying instantly, with another succumbing to injuries in the hospital. The bus driver, identified as Sohel, fled the scene immediately after the fatal accident.
RAB-7 Senior Assistant Director (Media) ARM Muzaffar Hossain confirmed the arrest, stating that Sohel was detained during a raid in the Ansar Camp area of Mirpur, Dhaka on Sunday night. During questioning, Sohel confessed to his involvement in the accident and revealed he had been moving between different locations in Dhaka to avoid arrest. He has since been handed over to the police for further legal action.
RAB reported that on April 1, Md. Rafiqul Islam embarked on a journey with 11 relatives and neighbors in a microbus from Mirpur, Dhaka, heading to Cox's Bazar. The following morning, as they reached the Chunati area of the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway in Lohagara upazila, their vehicle was struck head-on by a speeding bus from Relax Paribahan, causing it to overturn.
In response to the tragedy, on April 3, Md. Rabiul Hasan Sujan, the brother-in-law of the deceased Rafiqul, filed a case against the bus driver at Lohagara Police Station.
